Although it’s a little bit of a drive from The Aku Tiki, if you’re looking for an activity away from the beach that involves some amazing food, taking a trip to DeLand, FL and eating at Dally in The Alley for dinner is a great idea.
With a unique, locally sourced menu and a great selection of wines, local beers, and even homemade soda, it’s a dining experience that’s not to be missed if you’re staying in Volusia County.
Featuring locally sourced specials, as you can probably guess by the “Farm to Table” feature of the mural above, the menu is a little bit different every time. However, it always features a unique and of course, delicious, flavor of cupcake for dessert!
This time, I visited the restaurant with four family members. We arrived starving and made the excellent choice of starting our meal off with a (literally) mouthwatering appetizer – Florida longneck clams in a sauce consisting of potatoes, celery, white wine, cream, parsley, chives, garlic, and grilled slices of a freshly baked baguette. Even writing about this appetizer is making me hungry again! It was indescribably delicious and all four of my dining companions agreed that we want to come back and each order clams as our entree.
They were THAT good. The clams were complimented wonderfully by a bottle of wine from their extensive collection for my Mom and I, a homemade soda for my younger sister, and a beer from the adjacent Persimmon Hollow Brewing company for my Dad.
Making a dinner choice was extremely difficult for all four of us, as everything on the menu looked so delicious! I settled on something that I’d never had before – the Cuban Empanada Strudel. Described on the menu as a puff pastry filled with ground chuck, potatoes, capers, golden raisins, onions, and spices complemented by a fire roasted tomatillo hot sauce and avocado crema, I was certain I made a great choice – as it turns out, I was correct. Everyone at the table wanted to try a bite, and I have to say, I was reluctant to let them. It was THAT good. I’m glad I remembered to take a photo before I started eating, because I finished every last bite.
Despite each of us finishing every last bite of our respective entrees, it was impossible to say no to Dally in The Alley’s delicious looking dessert menu. I chose to go for their cupcake of the evening – mango coconut, while my sister enjoyed a dark chocolate espresso pie on a crust made of…Oreos! Both were equally delicious and we finished every bite.
If you couldn’t tell already by the “tone” of this article, I LOVE Dally in The Alley. Although it’s a bit of a hike from The Aku Tiki, it’s entirely worth the drive. Why not make a day out of it? Enjoy a beer at the nearby brewery and some local shopping too, while you’re at it!
